With his latest release titled, Surreal Dreams, Astral Darkness takes us on a musical space odyssey that loosens the grip that commercialism has had on electronic music in recent years. A producer and DJ, Astral has a clear view of where he wants to take his listeners and does not hesitate to assert his musical vision where necessary. Somewhat experimental in his approach to producing instrumental compositions, the Buenos Aires native has created his own genre; one I am officially calling, “morphwave” – a sound that lives on break beats and augmented synth effects.
Surreal Dreams offers an oblique perspective on the modern electronic music production we’ve grown accustomed to hearing from top commercial artists. Tracks like “Pulsing Star”, “Action To Reaktion”, and “Spectrum” give testimony to just how off the beaten path Astral Darkness’ music is. Each composition has it’s own unique identity and character, while still bearing enough resemblance to one another to keep the album from being uncomfortable to listen to. It all works together in a video game soundtrack sort of way.
Very progressive and full of twists and turns, Surreal Dreams moves forward with an air confidence that has no fear of challenging the status quo. Astral Darkness is highly inventive, blending a variety of tempos, grooves, sound effects, and synth pads that help him carve out his own space in the mental subdivisions of any listener who’s in search of something new and exciting to add to his/her playlist. I’d highly recommend this album to you if you like some of the artists over at Warp Records, because this is where I think Astral would be a great roster addition.
